Mekka Magazine had the honor of sitting down with Dr. Christopher Starr, a true visionary in the music world, as he steps into his new persona, Dr. Asaph. With his upcoming album “Greatest to the Least”, which features 16 powerful tracks, Dr. Starr reflects on his journey and the creative evolution that has brought him to this pivotal moment. We’re excited to share his story with our readers.

In this candid conversation, Dr. Starr opens up about the roots of his passion, the early influences that sparked his creativity, and the impactful collaborations that have shaped his career. He delves into the balance of artistry and business and how he mentors the next generation of musicians. From the rise of streaming platforms to the deeper spiritual themes within his latest work, Starr provides insights into the current state of music, the power of personal growth, and the healing potential of sound. He also offers practical advice for emerging artists while giving us a sneak peek at his future projects.

Can you tell us a bit about your journey and how you got started in music?

“Definitely! My journey started early, surrounded by a variety of sounds. Drums were my first love, but I picked up other instruments along the way—guitar, bass, keys. That exploration really laid the groundwork for my work as a producer. I’ve always been fascinated by how music can stir emotion and create connections, and that led me to a career where nurturing talent became central.”

Who were some of the key influences that fueled your passion?

“Stevie Wonder and Prince, without a doubt. Their ability to blur the lines between genres and create timeless music really inspired me. Their influence is still a part of my sound today.”

Looking back, what have been some standout moments in your career?

“One that really sticks with me is collaborating with Christina Aguilera. It wasn’t just creatively fulfilling; it was a lesson in professionalism. Every project has its own takeaways, and I’ve learned to respect each artist’s creative process.”

You’ve worked with some well-known names in the industry. What did those collaborations teach you?

“Working with artists like R.L. from NEXT and LaTocha Scott from Xscape showed me how powerful collaboration can be. Music is a universal language, and when different styles come together, something bigger than any one person can emerge.”

How do you balance the creative side with the business side when working with new artists?

“It’s all about communication and strategic planning. I always remind artists that their art deserves to be heard but that it’s also important to make sure it reaches the right audience. It’s a delicate balance, but one that can be mastered with the right approach.”

What’s your take on how streaming and social media are reshaping the music industry?

“They’ve changed the game. Artists now have direct access to global audiences without the traditional barriers. I see it as a new chapter in music, where artists can take control of their own narratives.”

What inspired your new album “Greatest to the Least”? What can listeners expect?

“This album is deeply personal. It’s a reflection on humility and purpose, drawn from my own spiritual journey. Listeners can expect a mix of sounds and messages, each designed to resonate on multiple levels. I believe music isn’t just to be heard; it should be felt.”

Can you share how your spiritual beliefs shaped the album’s creation?

“The process was introspective. I wanted the album to offer comfort and inspire reflection, blending different musical styles to create something universal. My faith played a huge role in guiding each song, with the message that ‘you’re not alone’ running throughout.”

How do you see your role as a musician today, compared to the biblical Asaph, the chief musician under King David?

“Asaph’s legacy is a big inspiration for me. He used his music to inspire and guide people in their faith, and I try to do the same. My goal is to use music as a tool for healing and growth, just as Asaph did, reminding myself that music is a form of spiritual connection.”

Where can fans find “Greatest to the Least” once it’s released?

“The album drops on October 22, 2024, and it will be available on all major digital platforms. I’m really excited for everyone to hear it.”

Do you think your music speaks to the times we’re in, especially for those seeking spiritual guidance?

“Without a doubt. In a world full of noise, I believe my music offers a space for reflection. It’s for those searching for something deeper, a soundtrack for their spiritual journey.”

Any advice for new artists who want to create music with a deeper message?

“Stay true to your voice. Authenticity is what resonates. And don’t shy away from using today’s digital tools to amplify your message and reach those who need to hear it.”
