But as I watched this year’s draft unfold, something stood out to me. Among the top 10 picks, three were international players. Is this the beginning of a trend? Are we starting to see a shift in how players make their way to the WNBA?
It raises a few questions:
Do you still have to go the traditional college route to get noticed? Or will more young players choose to develop their skills overseas before entering the draft? Could this signal a wave of high school prospects opting out of college to go pro internationally?
And here’s a big one—will the WNBA start to mirror the NBA by drafting more overseas talent and possibly introducing a G-League equivalent for women?
I believe in the next five years, we’ll see even more European and international players entering the WNBA. Mark my words—this could be the beginning of a major shift in how talent is developed and discovered in women’s basketball.
Once again, congratulations to all the amazing athletes drafted in 2025. I can’t wait for the season to begin—it’s going to be electric! Let’s keep pushing women’s basketball to the next level. The future is now.
Great observation about international picks. I didnt expect the wnba to follow nba in that model, at least not for a while. I wonder if and how this will impact future picks and paths to pro.
Great article and good perspective on what the future can hold!
