After a five-year hiatus, GRAMMY-nominated and ARIA Award-winning electronic music pioneers Cut Copy have triumphantly returned with their captivating new single, ‘Solid.’ Released via Cutters Records / The Orchard, the track reignites the vibrant energy and emotional depth that have defined the Australian band’s influential two-decade career.
‘Solid’ marks Cut Copy’s first original offering since their critically acclaimed 2020 album, Freeze, Melt. While Freeze, Melt invited introspection through its atmospheric and restrained soundscapes, ‘Solid’ gently propels listeners forward with the band’s signature buoyant synths, delicate rhythmic progressions, and a lyrical core that resonates with both personal and universal experiences.
Initially conceived as an instrumental piece, ‘Solid’ found its voice during a moment of creative clarity. The track unfolds with understated textures – softly pulsing keys and mellow basslines – gradually expanding into a rich sonic tapestry of shimmering synth layers and tactile percussive elements. At its heart lies a mantra-like chorus, “We’ll be solid,” repeated with a quiet yet persistent reassurance. The result is a track that seamlessly blends danceable energy with space for reflection, embodying a sense of resilient optimism.
Frontman Dan Whitford shared his inspiration behind the song, stating, “I wrote the song as a reminder to myself that things will be ok, even when life gets turned on its head and it feels like there’s no way forward. I hope in some small way it gives other people a little nudge forward in the direction of their dreams. Hang in there… we’ll be solid.”
Penned during a period of personal transformation for Whitford, ‘Solid’ encapsulates the emotional duality that Cut Copy has masterfully explored throughout their discography: tracks that feel equally cathartic on a festival stage and intimate through headphones in the quiet of night.
To celebrate their return, Cut Copy is also releasing a limited-edition, double-sided 12″ vinyl, available for pre-order on their website. The vinyl features an exclusive B-side track titled ‘A Decade Long Sunset.’
Since its inception as Whitford’s solo project, Cut Copy has evolved into a globally celebrated band, now featuring guitarist Tim Hoey, drummer Mitchell Scott, and bassist Ben Browning. Across six studio albums, the Melbourne-originated group has significantly shaped the global electronic music landscape while consistently pushing sonic boundaries. From the luminous highs of their breakthrough 2008 album In Ghost Colours to the textural explorations of Zonoscope and Haiku From Zero, their sonic journey has been marked by curiosity, craftsmanship, and an undeniable connection to the dancefloor.
Their accolades are a testament to their impact. In Ghost Colours was recognized among Pitchfork’s top albums of the 2000s, while Zonoscope earned a GRAMMY nomination and won ARIA’s Best Dance Release. Their influential remix and DJing work, exemplified by releases like Fabriclive.29 and Oceans Apart, further solidified their influence beyond their studio albums.
Cut Copy’s music has soundtracked countless cultural moments, from headlining major festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, Primavera, and Big Day Out, to prominent sync placements in film, TV, and commercials for brands like FIFA 18, Dolby, and Levi’s®.
With ‘Solid,’ Cut Copy doesn’t just return to rest on their laurels; they emerge to expand their legacy. The single marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter, built upon the same foundation of heartfelt songwriting, forward-thinking production, and an enduring sense of joy. And for fans eagerly awaiting more, the band has quietly hinted at the arrival of more new music in 2025.
After five years of silence, Cut Copy has broken the stillness. They never lost their rhythm. And now, with the resonant and uplifting ‘Solid,’ they’re inviting us all back to move with them once again.
