“Leading with love means unwavering devotion to your purpose, while extending empathy, understanding, and respect,” he shares. “I’ve never comprehended how one could work with people and not genuinely care for them. In many ways, my role here extends beyond president; I see myself as a father figure to our students, creating a space where they feel valued, seen, and supported in their educational, personal, and professional journeys.”

When Dr. James assumed leadership at Morris Brown, the institution faced a formidable array of challenges. Undeterred, he meticulously set about the task of rebuilding.
Under his guidance, Morris Brown achieved full accreditation through the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS), a pivotal step that reinstated access to federal financial aid and Title IV funding. He has secured millions in philanthropic support and forged essential partnerships, propelling the college rapidly forward.
However, when asked about his priorities, Dr. James doesn’t begin with fiscal figures. His focus invariably shifts to people, particularly his students, whom he guides with the same dedication and concern he would his own family.
Beyond the Presidency
For many within the Morris Brown community, Dr. James is more than a college president. He’s a trusted mentor, a source of inspiration, and indeed, a cherished father figure.
His leadership style is characterized by constant presence, attentive listening, and unwavering support. His open-door policy isn’t a mere formality; students genuinely know they can approach him and be heard, regardless of the concern. “It’s about being present, offering guidance with patience, and ensuring that my students know they are cared for unconditionally, no matter what,” he emphasizes.
“When individuals feel seen and supported, they rise to meet challenges,” he asserts. “That’s the environment we’re cultivating here.”
And this culture is demonstrably effective. Morris Brown isn’t simply enduring; it’s flourishing. The campus pulsates with renewed enthusiasm and advancement, fueled by a rediscovered sense of identity and direction.

“We don’t just confer degrees,” he explains. “We equip students to live meaningful, impactful lives. This purpose aligns perfectly with the mission of Morris Brown College: to provide educational opportunities in a positive and nurturing environment that will enable our students to become fully functional people in our global society.”
He exemplifies this ethos daily, a commitment that has garnered widespread recognition:
He’s been honored as HBCU College President of the Year by the HBCU Matters Foundation, cited among Atlanta Magazine’s Most Powerful Leaders, and recognized by the Atlanta Business Chronicle as one of its Most Admired CEOs in Education.
Yet, he remains grounded. For him, the ultimate objective has never been awards. It’s about legacy.

Dr. James articulates a clear vision for the legacy he intends to leave—one founded on faith, probity, resilience, and service to the community. “I hope to leave a legacy of hard work, integrity, compassion, resilience, and community service,” he says. “I want my students to understand that success is not just about personal achievement but about the impact we have on the lives of others.”
“Success isn’t solely about personal triumphs,” he states. “It’s about the positive influence you have on the lives of others. I believe in the motto, Lifting as we climb! For future generations, I aspire to create a lasting influence where those who follow know that it’s possible to lead with purpose, perseverance, and still achieve excellence.”
When Morris Brown reached a critical juncture, Dr. James didn’t capitulate. He galvanized alumni, the AME Church, and supporters from all walks of life. He termed this period “The Hard Reset.” And it proved successful—not just due to the funds raised, but because of the camaraderie and shared purpose he ignited.
“That experience taught me that when love guides, people respond. It was a moment where the values of love and purpose came together in action, creating a ripple effect that I hope will be felt for generations to come.”
Counsel for Fathers
As both a father and a leader, Dr. James comprehends the profound power of presence. His counsel to fellow fathers—and indeed, to anyone in a position of mentorship—is direct:
“Be present. Be intentional. Take the time to truly listen and understand the distinct needs of those around you. Leading with love isn’t about grand gestures; it’s about consistent, thoughtful acts of care and attention. Be clear about your values and let them steer your actions. Live with purpose.”
