Everett Drake: Uniting Faith and Hip-Hop to Inspire a New Generation

We had the incredible opportunity to interview one of gospel music’s most talented legends, Mr. Everett Drake. Thank you for speaking with us, Mr. Drake, at MEKKA Magazine. Your journey not only highlights a successful career but also showcases your commitment to inspiring a new generation of artists.

Reflecting on his time with BET’s Bobby Jones Gospel, Mr. Drake describes it as akin to attending school every Sunday. Each artist on that stage delivered a masterclass, crafting lyrics that resonated deeply with the audience. He recalls the intense dedication involved—memorizing over 60 songs to tape an entire season in just two weekends. For 35 seasons, that rigorous routine prepared him for the journey God had laid out ahead.

Mr. Drake emphasizes the importance of being open to learning. Living in Nashville has expanded his understanding of various singing styles. Once dominated by country and gospel, Nashville is now a vibrant mix of genres—pop, R&B, blues, jazz—each adding new dimensions to his artistry.

He’s still riding high from his recent collaboration with Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist Emcee N.I.C.E. on the 2023 single “Amen Right There,” which also features Canton Jones and Everett Drake. Produced by SciBlw, Canton’s then 14-year-old son, the track soared to #1 on iTunes in the Christian category. For him, it felt like a dream realized, especially after expressing a desire to have artists like Chance the Rapper or Lecrae reinterpret his work. Reflecting on that moment, he describes it as surreal, a testament to how quickly things can evolve in the industry.

“Having worked with many country artists over the years, both in the studio and during live performances, I would love to see someone like Jelly Roll or Eric Church, who incorporate faith-based material into their shows, put their unique spin on my song! With The War and Treaty recently releasing their powerful single “Can I Get An Amen,” I feel like my song could be a great follow-up. Just dreaming, but it’s exciting to think about!”

“Music will always evolve, reflecting the culture of its time,” he says, noting the shift from traditional gospel to contemporary sounds and the growing influence of hip-hop. While some might question the place of hip-hop in gospel, Mr. Drake believes the message is what truly matters. “Christian hip-hop artists are reaching a whole new generation that many of us may not have touched,” he explains, emphasizing the mission to spread the good news through any medium.

The Everett Drake Distinction in Radio Award celebrates radio stations, shows, and individuals who consistently uplift the cause of Christ through broadcasting. Each year at the SPIN Awards in Atlanta, we honor those who share events, devotionals, and uplifting messages with their listeners. Mark your calendars for October 26, 2024; the 8th Annual SPIN Awards will shine a light on our gospel music champions.

It took time for people to connect my name with the face they knew from the show. Thankfully, my stage presence made me memorable—I became known as “the light-skinned guy on Bobby Jones who points.” That little gesture turned into a signature moment for “Amen Goes Right There.” After countless interviews promoting my CD, people began to recognize me, and I was honored with awards like Lifetime Achievement and Trailblazer for my work over those 35 years. Today, I proudly wear the title of Mr. Amen Goes Right There!

In June, I had the honor of hosting the 16th Annual Rhythm of Gospel Awards in Mobile, AL—the largest award show for Independent Artists. Sharing the stage with the incredible Mz. Tiffany, a celebrated Christian hip-hop artist, made it even more special. As an indie artist myself, it was a joy to celebrate the creativity and talent within our community.

I’ve always had an interest in stage plays, but never pursued it until the opportunity knocked. A playwright I worked with, Dr. Lydia Wright-Hamilton, wanted to incorporate “Amen Goes Right There” into her play, N-IT-2-WIN-IT, and offered me a role! Not only did I perform my song, but I also stepped into acting. This led to more opportunities, including her film, Granny’s Place. The beauty of being an artist is the freedom to be yourself while sharing messages of hope, whereas acting requires you to inhabit a character fully—using body language and projection to breathe life into a role.

My advice? Pray for the right words and be a willing vessel for God’s guidance. Hone your craft so you’re ready when the moment arrives. Sing whenever you can—join a choir or praise team to build those vocal muscles. Surround yourself with people who inspire you, attend conferences, and seek mentorship from those who are doing what you aspire to do.

I’m excited about new music on the horizon for 2025! Conversations with innovative producers are underway, and we’re also reviving my talk show, Everett Drake N-Tune With Indies—a platform to educate and empower Independent Artists through performances and insightful discussions.
