Dr. Letitia Wright is a name that’s synonymous with innovation and resilience. Known for her dynamic presence in media and crowdfunding spaces, she has carved out a unique path that inspires entrepreneurs everywhere. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Wright to learn more about her incredible journey, the lessons she’s picked up along the way, and her thoughts on the future of crowdfunding.
A Journey Born Out of Necessity
Dr. Wright’s transition from chiropractor to TV host and crowdfunding expert wasn’t a premeditated career switch, but rather a creative solution to a challenge she faced early on. As she recalls, her TV journey began out of a desire to help herself—and others.
“I started the TV show because I was struggling in my practice,” Dr. Wright explains. “Unfortunately, when I sought help or coaching, I struggled to get that as well. I thought, if I interviewed business experts, I could get the information I needed and share it with others who also needed it.”
Back in 2000, the landscape was very different from today. “There was no YouTube, and few business development shows,” she recalls. Despite the limited resources, her TV show quickly became popular due to its practical advice and problem-solving approach.
Her foray into crowdfunding came about in 2010, spurred by the success of a friend who raised money for a book project. “Money was tight, and lenders weren’t lending at the time. Small businesses were in a horrible crunch, and I saw crowdfunding as a way for them to get the funding they desperately needed,” says Dr. Wright.
Over the years, her passion for crowdfunding has only grown. “Now, I’ve discovered an even bigger revelation: crowdfunding is a powerful economic engine when used correctly.”
The Essentials for Crowdfunding Success
When it comes to launching a successful crowdfunding campaign, Dr. Wright emphasizes the importance of preparation and community support. “You must have a tribe or crowd assembled before you begin,” she says. “If you’re pre-selling, a good video is a must. It’s crucial to provide a clear benefit for the person who is handing you money.”
This advice is grounded in the notion that crowdfunding is not just about money; it’s about relationships and trust. The clearer the benefit to the supporter, the more likely they are to contribute.
Choosing the Right Crowdfunding Platform
Selecting the right platform can make or break a crowdfunding campaign, and Dr. Wright is quick to note that it’s not a one-size-fits-all decision. “Before I begin the crowdfunding process, I look at the person first,” she explains. “What is their technical skill level? Comfort level? Once I know this, I try to match a platform to them and discern what would feel comfortable to them.”
The key is accessibility. “If it’s too difficult to use, people won’t invest their time and money into it,” she adds. With so many platforms available, finding the right fit for each individual is essential.
A Standout Campaign: “I Used to Be You”
When asked about memorable campaigns, Dr. Wright immediately recalls a heartwarming project called *I Used to Be You*. “The project is a photo book a woman created about an elderly woman’s life,” she says. “She couldn’t get an elderly woman to pose, so she dressed herself and took the photos.”
The campaign’s success, raising $10,000, was largely due to the emotional impact of the video accompanying it. “The whole project just touched your heart,” Dr. Wright shares. “Even years later, when I share the video as I teach, it continues to touch my heart.”
Common Mistakes in Crowdfunding
With her wealth of experience, Dr. Wright has seen many entrepreneurs falter in their crowdfunding efforts. The most common mistake? Lack of preparation.
“Zero preparation. Many people have done no work to prepare for this,” she says. “The larger the goal, the more prep time is required. People raising millions have spent six months or more preparing for the launch.” She also warns against the misconception that crowdfunding platforms handle marketing for you. “A good video and marketing efforts require money. Websites don’t do the heavy lifting for you,” she adds.
Staying Motivated Throughout the Process
For those just starting their crowdfunding journey, Dr. Wright offers one key piece of advice: “Have a team. Crowdfunding is not a solo sport,” she emphasizes. Building a strong support system can help entrepreneurs stay focused and motivated throughout the ups and downs of the process.
Career Influences and Reflections
Reflecting on her own career, Dr. Wright shares the best advice she’s ever received. “My mentor, Dame Doria Cordova, told me, ‘Your gifts are meant for the world, not only the United States. Become open to sharing them outside the U.S.’ That advice truly expanded my perspective and influenced my work globally.”
If she could go back in time to revisit one moment, it would be during her internship as a physician. “I loved every second of it. Each day was interesting and exciting,” she says fondly, noting how her time doing hospital surgical rounds was one of the most thrilling experiences of her career.
