As we close out 2024 and enter the new year, we had the pleasure of speaking with the multi-faceted business mogul, J. Alexander Martin. He’s the Founder and Executive Vice president of FUBU, CEO at FOR US BY US NETWORK, FOR US BY US STUDIOS, and FOR US BY US MUSIC GROUP, an author, and a business coach. We took a moment to reflect on his incredible journey and hear his insights
Can you take us back to the very beginning of your career? How did your journey start, and what inspired you to pursue a career in fashion and design?
Growing up, it was important to have the latest gear. Today, they call it “fit,” short for outfit, but back then, clothes made the man. We marketed ourselves with name-brand and off-brand items, using our wardrobe as a status symbol. Coming from a middle-class household, luxury items were a dream, but once I started working, I invested in clothes that spoke to my identity and aspirations. I always say, “Dress how you want to be addressed.’
You’ve built a billion-dollar brand with For Us By Us. What were some of the key challenges you faced during those early years, and how did you overcome them?
Creating a fashion brand was a major challenge. Before FUBU, the only other brands making waves were Karl Kani and Cross Colours. No one had done what we were doing. There wasn’t a blueprint to follow—we had to figure it out as we went along. We were the first to break through in so many areas, and that’s what made FUBU special.
Beyond fashion, you’ve expanded into music and film with your studios and production ventures. What prompted this transition, and how do these industries connect with your brand?
Advertising, marketing, and branding are all separate things, and they were approached very differently in the past. Back when we first started, there was no social media. We relied on billboards, magazines, and music videos to market FUBU. When artists wore our clothes in music videos, it was like a commercial—today, it’s the equivalent of going viral. Eventually, artists took their own business into their own hands and started their own lines, so we pivoted, created FUBU Records, FUBU Radio and later launched For Us By Us Network to promote our brand through television and digital media.
With such a wide-reaching influence, you’re a role model to many young entrepreneurs. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned throughout your career that you wish to share with those just starting out?
I always say you need both vision and patience. Using Google to find quick answers might work at first, but it won’t sustain you. It’s like having the answers to the test without being able to proof your work. The long road requires deeper knowledge and experience.
Looking at your brand’s growth, how have you managed to stay true to your vision while scaling your business? What strategies have been most effective for you?
The key to scaling is sticking to your core audience while also attracting new consumers. You build your business by maintaining a strong foundation and expanding your offerings as demand grows. It’s crucial to have a creative mindset that can envision the future and adapt to it.

You’ve built your career on creating a unique, culturally influential brand. What role does authenticity play in your work, and how do you maintain it in the face of constant change in the industry?
We’ve always stayed grounded in the principles of For Us ByUs. We remain students of the culture and fans of its evolution. We never forget why we created this brand—because we are the consumer, and we know what we want. That’s why I wrote The Strength of For Us By Us—to remind us all of our roots and mission.
As a Navy veteran, how did your military experience shape your approach to business and leadership? Are there specific skills you gained that helped you succeed?
The military taught me to pay attention to detail from day one. You don’t truly understand the importance of that until you transition into civilian life. In the military, mistakes can cost lives, so I carry that seriousness and commitment to excellence into everything I do, even the smallest tasks.
For those aspiring to follow in your footsteps, especially young designers, what advice would you give about the fashion industry and how to stand out in a competitive market?
I always tell young designers to zig when others zag. Find your own direction, stay true to it, and bring others along with you. Innovation and originality are key to standing out.

When you’re not working on your many ventures, what do you like to do for relaxation or fun? How do you find time to recharge?
Honestly, my life is my work, and the tasks that come with it are my relaxation. As an entrepreneur, my drive and vision never let me fully rest. My focus is always on making whatever I set my mind to be successful.
Looking ahead to 2025, what can your fans and the industry expect from you? Do you have any exciting projects or collaborations lined up that you’re excited to share?
In 2025, we’re launching the For Us By Us Network’s free AVOD app, along with a range of new, original reality shows, movies and documentaries. We’re also dropping new music through our partnership with BMG and building a state-of-the-art film studio to give independent filmmakers a top-tier space to create. There’s so much in the works, and we can’t wait to share it with the world.
