John Amos, the iconic actor known for his unforgettable roles in television classics like Good Times and Roots, passed away on August 21 in Los Angeles at the age of 84. His representative confirmed the news to Variety, citing natural causes.
Amos’ son, Kelly Christopher Amos, shared a heartfelt tribute to his father. “It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,” he said. “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life, and his legacy will live on through his outstanding work in television and film. My father loved acting throughout his life, most recently appearing as himself in ‘Suits LA’ and in our documentary about his life.”
Born on December 27, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey, Amos’ career took off in 1970 when he landed the role of weatherman Gordon “Gordy” Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. His talent for balancing humor and heart soon earned him even bigger roles, including his iconic portrayal of James Evans Sr., the hardworking father on Good Times. His portrayal of the character made him a household name and solidified him as a TV father figure to millions.
In 1977, Amos delivered one of his most memorable performances as the adult Kunta Kinte in the groundbreaking ABC miniseries Roots. His portrayal of Kinte, a man captured and sold into slavery, earned him an Emmy nomination and forever cemented his place in television history. The series, a stark portrayal of the horrors of slavery in the United States, captivated more than 130 million viewers—over half of the U.S. population at the time. Roots went on to win nine Emmys, a Golden Globe, and a Peabody Award, and its final episode remains one of the highest-rated TV broadcasts in history.
Amos’ extensive career also spanned a variety of roles in television and film. He appeared in popular series such as The West Wing, About the Andersons, Two and a Half Men, and The Ranch. On the big screen, he delivered standout performances in films like Coming to America, its 2021 sequel Coming 2 America, Die Hard 2, and The Beastmaster. His final role in the upcoming series Suits LA will be one of the last opportunities fans will have to see him on screen.
In recent years, Amos worked closely with his son to produce a documentary about his life, America’s Dad, to celebrate his legacy and impact as both an actor and a beloved figure in the entertainment industry.
John Amos’ remarkable career and lasting influence have left an indelible mark on the world of television and film. He will be remembered as a trailblazer, a talented performer, and a cherished figure whose work brought joy, insight, and inspiration to countless people around the world.
