Cissy Houston, the iconic gospel and soul powerhouse, two-time Grammy winner, and mother of the late Whitney Houston, has died at the age of 91. According to her daughter-in-law, Pat Houston, Cissy passed away peacefully at home on Monday morning, surrounded by loved ones, after battling Alzheimer’s disease under hospice care.
Born Emily Drinkard on September 30, 1933, in Newark, New Jersey, Cissy’s remarkable musical journey began in the 1950s with The Drinkard Singers, a gospel group that included her siblings. Their harmonies resonated deeply within the gospel community, setting the stage for Cissy’s own stellar career that would go on to span decades and influence generations.
In 1977, Cissy Houston stepped into the spotlight as a solo artist, releasing several albums that truly showcased her versatility as a performer. Her 1978 album, Think It Over, earned her a Grammy nomination, affirming her undeniable talent outside of her role as a backing vocalist. Yet, despite her solo success, Cissy is perhaps most cherished for her role as the guiding force behind the career of her daughter, Whitney Houston—one of the greatest voices in music history. Cissy nurtured Whitney’s incredible talent from a young age, offering both motherly love and professional wisdom throughout her rise to superstardom.
Cissy’s influence stretched far beyond her work in secular music, leaving an indelible mark on gospel as well. She won two Grammy Awards for Best Traditional Gospel Album, in 1996 and 1998, solidifying her as a vital figure in the gospel music community. Her contributions to both gospel and R&B have cemented her legacy as one of the most respected voices in the industry.
Outside of music, Cissy became a passionate advocate for causes close to her heart, particularly in the wake of Whitney’s tragic passing in 2012. She became a voice for drug addiction recovery, and her 2013 memoir, Remembering Whitney, is a heartfelt tribute to her family, offering a poignant reflection on her life, career, and the unbreakable bond she shared with her daughter.
During this difficult time, we want to extend our deepest condolences and respect to the Houston family as they grieve their loss. Cissy Houston’s legacy, both in music and in her profound role as a mother, will continue to inspire, and we honor her remarkable contributions while keeping her loved ones in our thoughts.
