Sabrina Carpenter has made UK chart history, breaking new ground with her latest triumph. Today, she becomes the first artist in 71 years to spend a staggering 20 weeks at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart within a single calendar year.
Her hit single “Taste” continues to dominate, sitting at Number 1 for the eighth consecutive week. This makes it the longest-running Number 1 of 2024, surpassing Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season.” But Sabrina’s reign doesn’t stop there. In total, she’s clocked up 20 weeks at the top of the charts this year with “Taste,” “Espresso” (which held the top spot for seven weeks), and “Please Please Please” (which reigned for five weeks). This achievement makes her only the second artist in UK chart history to rack up 20 weeks at Number 1 in a calendar year.
The last artist to hit that milestone was Frankie Laine back in 1953. Laine’s total of 28 weeks at Number 1 included a record-breaking 18-week run with “I Believe,” which still holds the title for the UK’s longest-running Number 1 single. He also topped the charts with “Hey Joe” and “Answer Me.”
As if dominating the charts wasn’t enough, Sabrina also landed her fourth Top 10 hit from her album Short N’ Sweet today. “Bed Chem” debuted at Number 9, adding another accolade to her ever-growing list.
Congrats Sabrina! The question is, who will reign next week? Stay tuned.
