Toby Gad, the acclaimed producer and songwriter behind some of pop’s most iconic tracks—like John Legend’s “All of Me,” Beyoncé’s “If I Were a Boy,” and Fergie’s “Big Girls Don’t Cry”—has teamed up with 15-year-old rising talent Mae Mae for their latest single, “No Matter What.” This release is a reimagined, piano-vocal version of the original track, co-written by Callum Scott and Gad, now available on all digital streaming platforms.
For over two decades, Toby Gad has crafted chart-topping hits for legends like Madonna, Paul McCartney, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, and Kelly Clarkson. His masterful compositions have left a lasting mark on the music industry, and with his recent album project PIANO DIARIES – THE HITS, Gad revisits his catalog, stripping down his biggest songs into intimate piano-based interpretations with today’s top vocalists. It’s clear that his creative journey is far from over, with new original works on the horizon.

In this fresh take on “No Matter What,” Mae Mae delivers a hauntingly raw performance that brings new depth to the emotionally charged autobiographical lyrics about the struggles of coming out, a narrative Toby and Callum Scott originally explored. With just piano, strings, and Mae Mae’s poignant vocals, this minimalist arrangement breathes new life into the song, offering a heartfelt connection to today’s LGBTQ+ youth. Gad’s expert instrumentation and Mae Mae’s powerful voice form a perfect blend, making this new version poised to resonate with a global audience.
Mae Mae and their father, Toby Gad, have already performed the song at notable venues across London, including Shoreditch Treehouse, The Kings Cross Clock Tower, and Metropolis Studios in Chiswick. Fans can also look forward to a live performance and lyric video filmed during their session at Metropolis Studio, set to drop on October 21st.
This single arrives ahead of the deluxe edition of Gad’s Piano Diaries – The Hits, which features collaborations with emerging artists like Victoria Justice, Keke Palmer, Aloe Blacc, Johnny Orlando, and Louisa Johnson. The album transforms Gad’s well-known tracks into stripped-back piano-driven pieces, showcasing a new side of his timeless compositions.
Mae Mae, a young singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, has been classically trained in piano since childhood and later taught themselves guitar. Blending their love of music with poetry, they crafted the songs for their debut EP Erosion, which was released earlier this summer. Mae Mae’s music—self-produced, written, and mixed—channels influences from artists like Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, and Phoebe Bridgers, offering a deeply personal and melancholic beauty. Their feature on former American Idol contestant Casey Abrams’ single, “Gloomy Day,” further highlights Mae Mae’s blossoming career, positioning them as an artist to watch.
